08/13/2002: "Bump in the Night"
I was awakened at 4:21 a.m. by a loud thwacking sound. I got up and went to the living room to look out the window.
There were two fire trucks with sirens going and two police cars blocking the intersection, also with their sirens whirling. I could see one of the firefighters whacking a car with a sledgehammer. That's what the noise was that woke me. I couldn't figure out what they were doing--trying to get someone or something out? I went back to bed after I realized that I couldn't see what was going to happen. This morning as I was leaving for work I tried to look at the car that was the object of the sledgehammer and saw that it was a Corvette that looked as if it had been on fire. If that's the case, I'm surprised I didn't hear the sirens.
