Measure 28 Defeated

Measure 28 was defeated by approximately a ten percent margin. For schools that means an additional nine days cut from the school year, bringing it to a total of 24 days. That means a pay cut for all school district employees. Anyone want to recommend some good temp agencies?

Income Tax Increase

Will Portland pass the income tax increase? If so, Oregon voters would be the first in the country to raise their own income tax rates in this current economic downturn. Good articles here and here.

Brand New Bag

sputnik (23k image) Look what I just ordered from Chrome Bags! It's the Sputnik 3. I can't wait. I've been using a bulky backpack (it has big zippered compartments that stick way out) to carry my laptop around and would rather have this cool streamlined messenger-style bag instead. Even better was that the bag was a factory second, which means it was way cheaper. I found the company via Boing Boing.

The Pianist

I spent yesterday's holiday at the movie theater watching The Pianist. It was a great film and I'd highly recommend it. Adrien Brody did an amazing job as Wladyslaw Szpilman. Roman Polanski also did a wonderful job of directing the movie and telling the story of this individual. I guess what I liked most was that the movie focused on this person and his struggle with survival in the Warsaw ghetto rather than focusing on the Holocaust. Go see it.

Bend: The Rules

In Bend, Oregon, city officials are proposing a strict set of regulations for those who want to use public transportation. In addition to rules against smoking, spitting, skateboarding and defecating (nitpickers...) a ban would go into effect for anyone who "emanates a grossly repulsive odor that is unavoidable by other Bend Extended Area Transit customers."

Bill Maher is Back

HBO will premiere a new series, Real Time with Bill Maher, on Feb. 21. I can't wait. I've sorely missed Politically Incorrect since it went off the air last year.
