Last night B and I headed over to the Memorial Coliseum for an enjoyable night of music by Franz Ferdinand and Death Cab for Cutie. The Cribs opened and then FF took the stage. They played a rocking set with a great light show. They ended their encore with a great rendition of "This Fire." Shortly after the lights went down, I felt something hit me in the head. I looked to the ground and there was a drumstick! I don't know who grabbed it first, but there was suddenly a three-way tug of war: B, a young FF fan dude, and me. A huge thanks to the dude who let go of the drumstick. You made this old gal's night!
A few weeks ago, I pulled my clarinet out of basement storage and took it to the Portland Music Company for a cleaning and overall tune up. I started playing the clarinet in middle school and continued playing all through high school. I was in orchestra and stage band, where I transitioned to the tenor sax, since the fingerings are pretty much the same as the clarinet. I was a little rusty at first, but after a couple of practice sessions, it has all started coming back to me. My airflow and tone are slowly getting better, so there are fewer squawks. I've been using a beginner's clarinet music book to practice scales and have a great book of clarinet solos full of recognizable tunes, like When I'm 64, Edelweiss, and Que Sera, Sera.
Lately, I've been using this blog as a repository for interesting links I find, but I swear I will try to post more often. Last weekend I got a small group of friends together to go roller skating at Oaks Park, which is mainly known as a mini amusement park with rides, but also has a skating rink onsite. If you grew up in Portland, chances are fairly high that at some point in your schooling, you took a field trip here. Once I stepped inside the rink, it was like I was back in 1980, but without all the teenage angst and drama. They still play live organ music, but only on certain days. And they still have fun with different skate sessions, like partner/couples skate, beginners backward skate, etc. It was really fun! So fun, in fact, that I'm heading over there tonight for some adult lessons.
